In Conclusion
At the end of the day, we asked forty fans which version of Link they preferred. The answer roared back: Toon Link. Although there was a lot of love for classic Link, and especially Twilight Princess, Toon Link won the day in the end. With 25 votes out of the forty, he crushed classic Link's 15 votes by almost double.
Really what won it for Toon Link was his personality. Fans commented again and again on his strong emotions and his facial expressions. Even veteran Zelda fans fell for his charming character. Oddly enough, it was the younger Zelda fans who overall disliked him. One went so far as to say, "Toon Link puts the smelly in mayonnaise" (Mason Riley). Whichever Link they chose, few sat on the fence undecided. Many had strong feelings to share. So there is still definitely a gap between fans as to which they prefer, but Toon Link is unquestionably the most liked.
The results of this survey represent well the present views of Zelda fans on Toon Link. Originally, a larger margin of Zelda fans disliked Toon Link. As Toon Link has made cameo appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series and gone on to star in two successful handheld games, the fan base has warmed up to him. Just a few months ago, The Wind Waker was rereleased in high definition for the Wii U, with rave critic reviews and enormous fan support. Toon Link is on a roll.
This in no way means that Nintendo is going to ditch their classic character Link. In fact, he just starred in a handheld game on the 3DS called A Link Between Worlds, to rave reviews. And fans are still eagerly anticipating the next big Legend of Zelda for the Wii U. Regardless of survey results, Link is still going strong. Toon Link may have won over fans' hearts, but the classic Link will always win their wallets.
